Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
Railway Substructure & Drainage Maintenance
- Inspect, assess, and maintain railway drainage systems including side or parallel drains, parallel intercepting or catch drains, cross drains, and erosion protection and mudslide prevention works along fills and cuts respectively.
- Oversee maintenance and rehabilitation of culverts, headwalls, wing walls, and inlet/outlet structures.
- Identify drainage deficiencies affecting track stability and recommend corrective engineering solutions.
- Supervise drainage cleaning, desilting, repair, and reinstatement activities along the railway corridor.
Access Roads, Bridges & Civil Structures
- Maintain railway access roads, crossings, and associated bridges to ensure safe access for operations and maintenance teams.
- Conduct routine and special inspections of bridges, culverts, and civil structures.
- Coordinate minor to medium rehabilitation works including concrete repairs, masonry works, and structural strengthening.
- Support bridge load assessments and condition reporting as required.
Earthworks & Track Support
- Monitor embankments, cuttings, slopes, and retaining structures for signs of instability or erosion.
- Implement corrective measures such as slope stabilization, erosion control, and drainage improvements.
- Support geotechnical assessments following heavy rainfall or unusual ground movement events.
Planning, Reporting & Asset Management
- Maintain accurate inspection records, condition assessments, and maintenance histories for civil assets.
- Support development and execution of preventive maintenance plans for civil substructure assets.
- Prepare work scopes, material estimates, and technical inputs for maintenance and renewal activities. Ensure all work activities are properly documented in the CMMS.
Safety, Compliance & Environment
- Enforce AML safety procedures during field works, including work near live railway tracks.
- Conduct risk assessments, toolbox talks, and site safety inspections.
- Ensure civil works comply with engineering standards, environmental regulations, and railway safety requirements.
- Promptly report and investigate incidents, near misses, or infrastructure failures.
Contractor & Team Coordination
- Supervise contractors carrying out drainage, culvert, road, and civil maintenance works.
- Ensure quality, workmanship, and compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate closely with Track, Operations, and HSE teams to minimize operational disruptions.
KPIs
- Drainage and substructure asset availability and condition ratings.
- Reduction in track geometry issues caused by drainage or substructure failures.
- Compliance with inspection and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Safety performance and environmental compliance.
- Quality and timeliness of maintenance execution and reporting.
Qualifications / Experience / Technical Knowledge
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline.
Experience
- Minimum 5–8 years experience in civil infrastructure maintenance, preferably in railway, mining, or heavy industrial environments.
- Proven experience in drainage systems, culverts, bridges, and earthworks maintenance.
- Field‑based experience working along linear infrastructure corridors.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of railway substructure principles and drainage design.
- Knowledge of concrete, masonry, earthworks, and erosion control techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and inspection reports.
- Familiarity with CMMS and standard maintenance planning processes.

Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, standards, and procedures.
- Participate in health, safety and environment training programs to understand potential hazards, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Report any health, safety and environmental concerns, incidents, or near misses promptly to the designated supervisor or safety officer.
- Assist in identifying workplace hazards and participate in risk assessments to minimize risks to personal health and safety.
- Wear appropriate PPE as required for specific tasks or environments and ensure that it is maintained and used correctly.
- Be familiar with emergency response procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly points, and first aid protocols.
- Follow established safe work practices and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses.
- Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely, following manufacturer's instructions and the AML safety guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and orderly workspace to reduce hazards and prevent accidents.
- Promote a culture of health and safety awareness among coworkers by encouraging safe behaviors and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Participate in health and safety committees or meetings as required, providing input and suggestions for improving workplace safety.
- Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.
Environment
- Oversee and monitor the environmental performance of your department's functions, ensuring high levels of awareness and compliance with company environmental policies and relevant environmental laws.
- Regularly review environmental performance metrics and indicators to track progress, identify trends, and address areas for improvement.
- Ensure all environmental incidents are reported promptly and investigated thoroughly in line with company policies and legal requirements.
- Uphold a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance within the organization by setting clear expectations for incident reporting and response at all levels.
- Collaborate with the Environment team to identify opportunities for environmental improvement and develop strategic programs to enhance sustainability practices.
